Pharma and patient groups

Good to see the ABPI is taking a proactive stance in responding to criticism. In this case, it’s come from a respected newspaper, the Herald Scotland, which criticised the links between pharma companies and patient groups. These links are absolutely vital to ensure that development of medicines doesn’t take place in a vacuum, as the ABPI’s Andy Powrie-Smith says. However, it is right that such relationships are conducted with strong safeguards and transparency on both sides. It’s right that the donations from pharma companies are made public on the patient groups’ websites (as they are) and also listed in any submissions to regulatory/funding agencies.  When done with transpareny, neither the pharma companies nor the patients groups have anything to hide.
